317L is a low carbon version of 317 stainless. It possesses the same high strength and corrosion resistance and will produce stronger welds due to its low carbon content. Many users are shifting over to this alloy in lieu of 304 and 316 as availability and cost improves.

317L stainless steel ,compared to conventional 304 series stainless steel, has a greater corrosion resistance.317L stainless steel is a molybdenum-based austenitic stainless steel.317L alloy has a higher ductility, stress , compressive strength and high temperature corrosion resistance performance.

317L stainless steel Hot Forming
Working temperatures of 1652 – 2102°F (900 – 1150C) are recommended for hot working processes. 
Do not work this alloy below 1742°F (950°C). If the final forming temperature falls below this threshold, 
a solution anneal of 1976 – 2156°F (1080 – 1180°C) is necessary. Rapid quenching is required.

317L stainless steel cold Forming
The alloy is quite ductile and forms easily. The addition of molybdenum and nitrogen implies more powerful
processing equipment may be necessary when compared with the standard 304/304L grades.
